Weddings are about so much more than dresses and flowers and all the trappings of a fabulous party. Weddings are also about honoring the families who raised us, as we take our tender chance at starting a family of our own.
No wedding I’ve ever photographed before has exemplified this more than Erin and Riley’s wedding, in Baltimore Maryland.
They traveled from across the country to be married in the same church where Erin’s grandparents were married decades before. Their family joined them from all corners of the United States to celebrate with them, and every moment, every detail, was carefully planned with family tradition, and hospitality for their guests in mind.
I could use the entire blog post to tell you about the beautiful details Erin picked out.
The cathedral veil.
The Kate Spade ring dish.
The invitation suite, and even her vintage dress hanger, that all made for one of the most visually beautiful weddings I’ve ever seen.
But I think what made Erin and Riley’s wedding day so beautiful was the love. Not just between the two of them, but the genuine love and care they showed to everyone around them. There was something different about it. Something that made you think “This isn’t something I’m going to see every day, in every couple. This is special.”
You felt it when Erin’s mother helped her on with her veil. You felt it when Erin and her sister Sara asked for a photo together, and within seconds completely forgot anyone was even watching – let alone photographing them – and without any prompting, shared a genuine hug and whispered words of love and congratulations.
You felt it when Erin slipped on Riley’s grandmother’s pearls, which were the same pearls his sister Marissa wore at her wedding last year.
And again when she sat down in a quit corner by the window to read a love letter Riley had written her the night before.
There were so many moments like this throughout the day, you eventually stopped counting them, and just sank into the warm, welcoming feeling of being in the presence of real love. Of real family.
After their ceremony at Saints Philip and James Catholic church in downtown Baltimore, the party moved to the Evergreen Library and Museum – a gorgeous, sprawling, private estate in Baltimore. Their reception was just as full of warmth and tenderness.
Erin and Riley, I’ll be wishing you the very best for your future, and your new family, and a life full of love, adventure, and friendship together.
Cheers, to the next 60 years!!
