There are so many magical things in the world – really, too many to count. But there is no doubt in my mind that an engagement session in the desert at sunset is surely one of them.
Tara + Steven are one of my 2017 couples, getting married at the McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale next April. For their engagement session, they wanted a location that best displayed the thing that makes Arizona the most unique: our amazing desert.
Of course suggesting a location at that point was no problem. I’ve done so many engagement sessions in the Superstition mountains near my favorite wedding venue, The Paseo, so many times in the last year I feel like I live there, and I knew it would be exactly what Tara and Steven were looking for.
The day of their engagement session, we somehow got even more lucky, when just the perfect amount of wind started sweeping through the desert. I knew Tara was planning to wear a longer dress for the first half of the session, and the whole drive out to the Paseo I was imagining the most beautiful images of a couple gazing into one another’s eyes, as the wind swept her dress and her hair, and the sun set behind them.
Can you tell I really, really like romance in my imagery??
Luckily for me, Tara and Steven really are in love in a way that is genuinely romantic, and fun to watch. They get each other, and have such a relaxed, natural attitude when they’re together, they seem like they’re already married, and have been for years. He makes her laugh, she makes him smile, and nothing about their interaction feels forced or strained. I love that.
We even managed to pull off my one and only engagement session party trick:
The engagement ring in a jumping cactus!
Even more miraculously, no one was stabbed or attacked by cholla stickers, and we didn’t lose the ring deep in the stabby bowels of this murderous little plant/thing. Success!
Tara and Steve, thank you so much for choosing me to be your wedding photographer! I cannot wait to see you guys again in April!
